I removed the grille from the car by simply unscrewing the four chassis screws and unclipping the grilles from the body.
The black inserts can also be unclipped backwards with a bit of persuasion.

And then you have the headlight openings nicely cleared again.

From my model railway background I'm familiar with KristalKlear. That's a light adhesive (similar to wood glue) that dries completely transparent.
Using a toothpick I stretched a thin film layer of it over the openings.

|
The next day, this had dried nicely transparent.
And let's be honest, that doesn't look bad at all, does it?!

|
And it's completely clear.
|
|
|
Look at that. He's looking great again.
|
|
|
And there's light at the front.
